Observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, the Double Yang Festival (重陽節) is a day which originated to protect against the danger from too much yang (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) according to the I ching.

On this day of double 9’s, many local Qingdao citizens will climb Laoshan, drink chrysanthemum wine and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant. Both zhuyu and chrysanthemum are considered to have cleansing properties.
The zhuyu plant is often displayed around the household to protect and cleanse. On this holiday some Qingdao locals will also visit the graves of their relatives to pay their respects.
